Xpherix Goes Wireless: New Mobile Data Service Provides Connectivity
for Mobile Professionals
San Jose, California, -- March 3, 2003--
Xpherix Corporation, the leading provider of personalized
mobile connectivity, today announced iPhonebook™ wireless
access for mobile professionals. iPhonebook, a mobile data
service, provides subscribers with an online address book
that wirelessly links their mobile phone to their existing
Personal Information Manager (Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express
and Palm Desktop) content.
iPhonebook offers subscribers one-device
convenience for all their address book numbers (business,
mobile, home or pager). Subscribers can use their mobile phone
to search through their contacts, find the desired number,
and with one touch, get connected. With iPhonebook, the mobile
phone display can also be used to browse other personal contact
information such as addresses, email addresses and the Notes
field. No more carrying electronic organizers, laptops or
bulky address books.
"Wireless access to an entire address
book is a service critical to subscribers, especially mobile
professionals, who depend on contacting people for their livelihood,"
said Nick Walker, president and CEO, Xpherix. "Additionally,
despite subscriber adoption growth predictions, wireless carriers
are concerned that subscribers will not use the data services
that new networks are capable of delivering. iPhonebook provides
a valuable service to the subscriber while introducing the
benefits of data services."
Unlike ring-tones and games, iPhonebook
helps satisfy the need behind purchasing a mobile phone -
to communicate. iPhonebook subscribers continually use wireless
carrier networks to access content and then make voice calls
based on the data.
"As wireless penetration reaches
a saturation point, wireless carriers the world over are increasingly
turning to non-voice services, such as iPhonebook, to drive
revenues," said Rachel L. MacAulay, Program Director,
Mobile Pervasive Communications at The Kelsey Group. "iPhonebook
is unique in that it holds the key to driving both voice and
data usage from a wireless device, allowing carriers to book
revenues on both sides of the house."
According to recent Yankee Group research
forecasts, there was 23.4 million mobile data service subscribers
in the US at the end of 2002. That number is expected to grow
83% every year for the next four years, bringing the total
to more than 128 million subscribers by 2006 and generating
revenue totaling $5.8 billion.
iPhonebook also incorporates patent-pending
Xpherix Phone Number Parser. The Phone Number Parser is proprietary
technology that cleanses user-entered data - such as data
entered into Microsoft Outlook - and makes phone numbers dial-able
from a mobile phone or through a directory assistance operator
with call completion.
Note to editors: iPhonebook has been
selected by CTIA's Wireless Widgets Showcase. The Wireless
Widgets Showcase will take place March 18, in booth 4514,
Hall E, at CTIA in New Orleans.
